Standard BoxThe Standard Box is an addition of two simple cubes to a traditional craftsman style bungalow, consisting of an attached Master Bedroom and a detached two car Garage with an Painting Studio above for local artist Kelly Paige Standard. The additions are juxtaposed next to the historic home in such a way that they create and define additional outdoor spaces. In order not to replicate the past but to use it as an instrument of inspiration the new simple boxes take advantage of new technological advances in the craft of building. By using a laser cutter to fabricate a new type of building siding that creates a unique building articulation, defines openings, and reduces heat gain (by having a one inch separation), this addition uses the same spirit of innovation as the original craftsmen intended when using ship building tools for home construction. The fabrication process of the proposed siding along with the building orientation sets off the cladding/skin concept for the West, the Roof, and East building surfaces. The openings in the pattern were coordinated with the interior uses and create additional interest on the exterior façade. On the North and South facades the building will be clad using weathered and sealed COR-TEN steel panels in response to the harsh southern sun; it serves as a cap to the hardy-board wrap. This unique approach to the building surface has created a dynamic and artistic project that is anything but your standard box. ![]() STND BOX 04 |
