Newark Visitor CenterInstitutional Visitor Center The Ironbound, Newark, New Jersey Newark Visitor Center Competition
The Newark Visitor Center (NVC) responds to its environment by creating an entry gateway to the new Riverfront Park, extending the green space onto the building, and referencing the site’s heritage. The site is situated at one end of the new Riverfront Park and with its proximity to Penn Station, delineating a path from the train station to the park seemed to be a natural urban planning reaction. Serving as the gateway to the park the additional traffi c will help the NVC gain additional funds through revenues generated from day to day park users. To preserve the new open space the design extends the park onto the building making a seamless integration of park and visitor center. The extension adds to the public green space while helping to conceal the service, parking, and utility areas that would otherwise be visible. As a tribute to the community of Ironbound, the design creates two distinct components to respond to its ambiguous name heritage. First, the south facade which faces the city is clad in recycled metal made from shipping containers, as a reference to the metal foundries that were in that area. The second reference is the circulation system which mimics the passing loops in single track railway systems. The elongated circulation system uses the gentle ramps that will be used as permanent displays for each of the 5 wards. Each ward will decorate and design the hall to reflect their history and heritage. The NVC will off er a unique experience to every visitor.
